Dear Network Member-

Most of us are now in the busiest and most exciting part of our year, so I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a productive and positive semester!  As you take time from your schedules to review this edition of News From the Front, you'll notice new features that I think you'll find interesting.  First, there is a fun and informative "Trivia" box that allows us to test our knowledge of little considered facts.  And there is a "Microsoft Tip" to help us better use our computers!  Of course, this edition is chalk full of the informative articles you've come to expect, including results from the recent SAMSHA and CAMY surveys.

I'd also like to encourage you to register for and attend the US Department of Education's 21st National Meeting in Omaha.  Not only is this THE meeting at which to gather cutting edge information in the field of prevention, it is also a venue for meeting colleagues in your Network Region through the Regional Roundtable meetings scheduled for Saturday morning, October 20th.

If you are unable to join us, your Regional Director will be able to provide you with information about the meeting upon his/her return to campus, so be sure to contact your RD!  If you do plan to attend, I look forward to seeing you in Omaha!

Reported Teen Marijunana Use Declines, Abuse of Prescription Drug Rises, Survey finds - Bob Curley

Fewer adolescents are telling federal researchers that they use marijuana, but the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported that most indicators of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use remain relatively unchanged from 2005.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) unveiled the survey results on Sept. 6, with federal officials touting a 25-percent reported decline in marijuana use among male youths between 2002 and 2006 but fretting over the 2.2 million new nonmedical users of prescription drugs, including narcotic painkillers. Most users of prescription drugs for recreational reasons reported getting the drugs free from friends or family members.

Study Says Raising Prices May Not Make Smokers Quit
A new study that compared smoking rates, economic status and cigarette prices concludes that raising the price of cigarettes does not appear to affect whether smokers decide to quit, Reuters reported Sept. 11.

Researcher Peter Franks of the University of California at Davis and colleagues said that while smoking has declined over the past 20 years in the U.S., and the trend does coincide with an increase in the average price of a pack of cigarettes, the two are not necessarily related. Tellingly, smoking among low-income Americans actually increased somewhat during the study period, while falling among the higher-income population.

How Much Booze Is Good For You? - Daniel J. DeNoon
Light drinking helps heart health. But more than one drink a day for women and more than two daily drinks for men are harmful.

That's the bottom line from a state-of-the-art review of drinking and health by University of Missouri cardiologist James H. O'Keefe, MD, and colleagues.

The researchers note that study after study shows health benefits for moderate drinking. These benefits appear to come not from the type of alcohol, but from the alcohol itself.

From 2001 to 2005, youth1 exposure to alcohol advertising in magazines fell by 49%,2 according to an analysis conducted by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) of 16,635 advertisements costing nearly $1.7 billion. The largest year-to-year drop occurred between 2004 and 2005, when youth exposure fell by more than a quarter. Alcohol industry trade associations adopted a more restrictive standard for advertising placements in the fall of 2003, and by 2005 nearly all alcohol advertisements in magazines were placed in magazines with youth audience compositions lower than the industry standard.

Schools Can't, Shouldn't Shoulder Prevention Burden - Bob Curley
Most American kids receive some drug education in the classroom, but a new report contends that schools should not be relied upon to prevent early use of alcohol and other drugs and its consequences.

The report, "Preventing Education in America's Schools: Findings and Recommendations from a Survey of Educators," noted that 37 states require schools to teach students about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. However, "Teachers don't have the time, training or other resources needed to do the job effectively, regardless of what the state-mandated standards say," according to the report by Join Together and Communitas Online.
